Eva Conrad, Ceramicist and Painter based in Pittsburgh, PA, is a part of the current resurgence of the pattern and decoration movement. Conrad intentionally straddles contemporary art and craft traditions; through an interest in the history of creating beyond necessity. The work they make stands vibrantly apart from any other work in the ceramics field, with strikingly ambitious patterns consisting of dozens of glazes laying atop a wavering surface that her hand built methods produce. She weaves patterns in and out of their ceramic sculpture and paintings repetitively as meditation on systems of being. The work cohesively joins the wall as continuation of surface exploration, and an expansion of material conversation. She is distinguishing space in a way that has you wondering where the borders really are. Her work emerges in the world as a reflection on beautiful moments of attentive introspection, intuition and curious play amid seemingly rigid binary systems.
